Ivf possible for tight cervix?

Post by Zachy123 »

Dear Dr. Wilsot,

I'm considering ivf treatment in near future. However I'm concerned that it's not possible for me as I was told that my cervix is pretty tight. My hsg needed to be reschedule and misoprostol was required prior to the procedure.

1) For people with tighter cervix (no hx of cervix issue or surgery), is ivf embryo transfer still possible?
2) what can possibly be done (such as meds or special tool?) so that embryo transfer is possible? Can misoprostol be used to open cervix prior to embryo transfer?
3) is the catheter for ivf embryo thicker, thinner, or same size as the Catheter used for IUI?

Thanks!!

1. Yes. The way to get in can be determined in a trial transfer. If it is very difficult they can dilate the cervix or do a hysteroscopic resection to open the canal.

2. Misoprostal can be used to help find the way for the trial transfer but not for the actual transfer itself.

3. It depends on which catheter they use but generally they are the same size.

Doing a difficult transfer is one of the "arts" of IVF.
