Implantation rate after Day 3 biopsy

Post by GoFollies »

Dear Dr Wisot

I have just read a paper that suggests biopsy of Day 3 embryos can damage them leading to a significantly reduced implantation rate.

As there was only one paper I could find on this topic I questioned its validity and wanted to ask what your experience is in practice? What would be the expected implantation rate in you clinic for biopsied v's not biopsied embryos?

We no longer do day 3 biopsies, only day 5 because the PGS is so much more accurate and the chance of damaging an embryo taking out a couple of cells in a 100+ cell embryo is much less than removing one cell from an 8 cell embryo.

Dear Dr Wisot

Thank you for your reply.

We have done day 3 biopsy for PGD and intend to do frozen transfer. Do you think we have ruined the chance of these embryos implanting?

No. Everyone used to do day 3 biopsies before the technology to go to Day 5 was available, and they worked.
