progesterone induction

Post by Emme1 »

I am in my mid 40s and my cycles have become erratic. In addition, my FSH turned up, for the first time in many years, quite high - 78 this summer. This was however measured totally out of cycle as I had not have a period in 2.5 months at that time. My ob-gyn was quick to label me menopausal, with no further discussion -- based only on the FSH, despite the fact that I still have around 10 visible follicles on ultrasounds I have done elsewhere, and that I do not have any other signs of menopause. More specifically, the ob-gyn refuses to let me try to induce a withdrawal bleeding with the progesterone.
Do you recommend or approve a progesterone induction in cases like this, or do you subscribe to the notion that a high FSH indicates menopause?
Thank you.

There is very little risk in taking the progesterone. It will not tell you if you are menopausal but it can prevent the build-up of the endometrium (hyperplasia) from unopposed estrogen so it might be a good idea if you are not cycling yourself.

A repeat FSH along with an estradiol level might be helpful in determining where you are in the progression to menopause. If the FSH and estradiol is low that would strongly suggest menopause.

Since this is not the subject of this forum there is not much else I can recommend. Maybe see a menopause specialist.
