RPMG’s Dr. Arthur Wisot was featured answering a reader’s question in Star Magazine’s “Health-Tips for feeling good in Hollywood” column in its November 26th issue.
In answer to a reader’s question about Khloe Kardashian’s problem with ovulation, Dr. Wisot responded:
“The most common reason that someone Khloe’s age does not ovulate is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Women with PCOS have irregular or no periods and may have symptoms from a excess of male-type hormones like extra hair growth, acne or trouble losing weight. They also have a typical PCOS appearance of their ovaries on ultrasound. Other reasons include stress, very low body fat, competition-level exercise and a variety of hormonal abnormalities.
Fortunately your Ob/Gyn can usually pinpoint your problem using a combination of ultrasound and blood tests. If it’s PCOS, it can usually be corrected by using a combination of drugs, most often the anti-insulin resistance drug metformin and the fertility drug Clomid. If your weight is a problem, weight loss may also help.
Most ovulation problems will respond to fertility drugs, the type depending on the cause and severity of the problem. If your Ob/Gyn can’t resolve the issue then you can see a reproductive endocrinologist.”
