DNA Fragmentation

Post by JayKatia »

Hi,
My husband and I have been TTC for over 6 years. I have had all the tests, chlomid and 4 cycles of ivf- not one pregnancy. DH just had sperm test done and it indicated 61% sperm is fragmented (test says should be less than 25%).
We are pretty certain this is why we never had a pregnancy.
Do you think based on these numbers it is worth trying ivf again?
We are afraid to go down that road if our chance is minimal?
Any comments/ advice would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

Hi:

Before trying IVF again your husband could go on an intensive vitamin and antioxidant regimen, then repeat the DNA fragmentation test. He should also make lifestyle changes if necessary like stopping smoking, alcohol, caffeine and recreational drugs.

If not normal I have successfully used sperm obtained by TESE (testicular biopsy) which are immature and have not gotten to the point when the DNA fragments.

Thanks Dr Wisot for your reply.
He is now taking COQ10, vitamin E, Zinc, Wheat grass, Vitamin C, Folate, Men Multi, B Complex, Fish oil, Royal Jelly. He has also cut out smoking, coffee, & alcohol completely (he really wants a biological child so he is prepared to do what ever it takes!)
Is there any other vitamin/ anti ox you think could help?
How long should he be on this regime before re- testing?
Also when you have done TESE can this be done via IUI?
Many thanks

That sounds good. I cannot make specific recommendations in this forum.

I would repeat in three months. TESE has to be done in conjunction with IVF/ICSI.
